Il Pirata Reviews

Dear Friends and Members of the Tuesday Morning Music Class,

We thought you might like to see the superb reviews for Will's recent Caramoor production of "Il Pirata," which seems to have been a hit with 100% of the critics thus far.  (Some magazine reviews are yet to come.) There is also some excellent coverage of the expanded program starting next year at Teatro Nuovo.

The performance was recorded for future broadcast by WQXR, and we'll keep you posted when the air-dates are announced.

A Soaring Soprano Helps Bel Canto at Caramoor Say Farewell

"The chorus and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s were led by Maestro Crutchfield with a lively, swift-paced hand. "

Imogenary Beings

"The chorus and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s were led by Maestro Crutchfield with a lively, swift-paced hand that brought the evening’s preposterous catastrophes too soon to worry how little sense they made."
Wall Street Journal

A Full-Throated Farewell

"Mr. Crutchfield led the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in a sensitive, elegantly shaped performance that found the score’s elegiac qualities as well as its fire."
Opera News

Il Pirata

"Crutchfield showed himself a master of Bellinian rubato, quickening and slowing the long melodies to make them seem suspended on elastic, taut yet pliant."

Potent Il Pirata Closes Bel Canto Era At Caramoor

"Crutchfield led the excellent Orchestra of St. Luke’s in a wide-ranging performance: sometimes vigorous, sometimes subtle, always in balance and always supporting his singers."
Broadway World

With Meade and PIRATA, Crutchfield's Bel Canto at Caramoor Goes Out with a Bang

"The production was strongly cast from the principals down to the well-trained chorus of the Bel Canto Young Artists"

Bellini's Il pirata docks at Caramoor

"This is why “Bel Canto at Caramoor” is such a vital part of New York’s operatic life."
Voce di Meche

Il Bellissimo Bellini

"Argentinean tenor Santiago Ballerini ... possesses a stunning messa di voce and manages to float the high notes without apparent effort."
Gay City News

Bel Canto at Caramoor Bids “Addio”

"Crutchfield and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s presided over a colorful, rousing interpretation of Bellini’s youthful blood and thunder score. Crutchfield masterfully used rhythm and color to point up the drama and pull the listener through a few dull passages in Bellini’s uneven score."
