Archives - Fall 2021

Sept 21  Fire Shut Up In My Bones - The columnist, the book, the composer, and the cultural politics of 21st century opera.

Sept 28  The Original Boris - The Met has promised Mussorgsky’s original for the first time. What does that even mean? Plus: the cultural politics of 19th century opera.

Oct 5, 12 and 19  Die Meistersinger in Depth - Since this approach proved so rewarding for our deep dive into Wagner’s Ring cycle, we will go through the composer’s most uplifting opera in the same way, act by act - storytelling, musical highlights, analysis, and samples of the great interpreters.
Oct 5: Act One
Oct 12: Act Two
Oct 19: Act Three

Nov 9  Why Russia? - With practically no tradition or old masters to build on, Russia in the late 1800s claimed a musical status to rival Italy, France, and Germany, which had been working on it for several centuries.

Nov 16  Eurydice - Tuesday Morning members will recall Matt Aucoin from a pair of visits he made some years back as a young pianist and aspiring composer. Now his opera is arriving at the Met (premiere Nov. 23).

Nov 30  Operas for Children - A festive romp through the ten best operas for children (and grandchildren).
